The Trump administration is proposing to cut $1.2 billion from the National Park Service budget, in large part by transferring potentially hundreds of sites to state and tribal management. These include national monuments, historical parks, battlefields and protected areas that aren't among the 63 "crown jewels" with "national park" in their name. However, states including Maryland and New Mexico — which have large numbers of at-risk sites — oppose the proposal, citing limited budgets and warning that some spots could end up closing due to a lack of resources, Bobby Magill reports.
