Dear Theater Fans, Greetings from London! Amid some museum-hopping, I've taken in a few shows, including the utterly magical "My Neighbour Totoro" and the profound "The Years," based on Annie Ernaux's novel. Back in New York City, there's plenty of excitement afoot on Broadway. Erik Piepenburg went behind the scenes of "Stranger Things: The First Shadow" to break down "a coup de théâtre" in the big opening scene that the show's producers are hoping "will knock theatergoers' socks right off." Jesse Green named two recently opened Broadway productions Critic's Picks: the "urgently necessary" Kimberly Belflower play "John Proctor Is the Villain," starring Sadie Sink and directed by Danya Taymor, and "Smash," a Susan Stroman-directed show that's "the great musical comedy no one saw coming." Alexis Soloski caught up with Whitney White, an in-demand director who is starring in "Macbeth in Stride," her adaptation of the Shakespeare tragedy. It's at the Brooklyn Academy of Music now, and follows her direction of Bess Wohl's "Liberation" Off Broadway and Jason Robert Brown's "The Last Five Years" on Broadway. "I am looking, I am hungry, I am searching," White said. While on the subject of "Macbeth," Donmar Warehouse's 2023 production, starring David Tennant, is available for streaming, as are a couple of others highlighted by Rachel Sherman.
